Getting Ready for IB Post MBA

Hey everyone ,

I was fortunate enough to be admitted into Stanford GSB through the deferred MBA route. I plan on switching careers into IB. I currently work in the finance industry but unrelated to IB; think insurance and actuarial services. I was wondering what would be the best way to get ready to recruite for IB during my MBA.

Are you sure about IB post Stanford? I mean really sure? If yes, here are some things, (am an M7 MBA in IB)

1/ Frankly not many from GSB come to IB anymore, the numbers are very less, so finding Alumni to network is the 1st challenge

2/ Banks have grown tired of not getting any return from GSB so instead have started going to Tier-2 schools like Duke (let’s face it IB doesn’t really require a M7 MBA)

3/ Having said above, some banks, like BofA and MS do come to campus, so as long as your have your script ready and go through the usual materials, IB recruiting is programmatic

I appreciate the feedback. I know not a lot of people from GSB recruit for IB, but that’s a path I have always wanted to take. I’m curious as to why IB from Stanford is not a good idea?

Can I ask what your background is like?

The deferred admission pipeline at Stanford GSB is incredibly elite (they take what, like 30 kids every year?) and I'd argue it's a bigger accomplishment than any banking offer you could possibly land out of undergrad. If I were you I would reconsider going down the IB path (the reason why Stanford places so few into IB is not because people can't get offers, but simply because they'd rather do something else). But if you want, you will have no trouble getting offers. You're already set. Good luck :)
