Goldman Sachs Internal Mobility

Hello,

I couldn't find a proper thread on this topic so I wanted to ask those who work in GS about their internal mobility programs.

I have been offered to join securities lending desk at GS, but this role is something that I am not too interested in. However, I can't completely ignore GS name value. How practical would it be if I plan on transferring to IBD/S&T? I can't trust the HR and would like some objective opinions!

Thank you in advance!

Very, very hard to advance with internal mobility unless your BUM AND HCM point (in FICC, e.g. Allyson [?]) both: (1) unambiguously agree you're top-bucket (2 believe your talents are squandered in your current position

Very tricky to navigate GS politics so well that you simultaneously crush your current role AND prove your attractiveness for IBD through demonstrable technical and social proficiency.

Thank you. So you are stressing that I would have to achieve both. Would this be the same within securities division? PB is under sec so would it be fair to say that internal mobility into equities & fixed income roles are possible after the 2 year analyst program, given that I have indeed achieved top bucket? My SA gig was at high yield desk at non-BB and I did receive return offer there, maybe this can illustrate my talents are squandered in PB?

Be realistic. If you are in OPS, FIN, TECH etc.... please do not apply to IBD, SEC or IMD your chances are very slim and your current manager probably wont like it. The chances of actually moving are very little unless you have been talking to a group and they have indicated they are interested in you and probably wont take their intern and will be looking for someone else to fill the analyst role. Do not apply for the sake of applying, be smart about it and only apply if you have a real shot.

cheers

I was told by HCM that our manager would not be notified of our application?

I have a few friends who have tried to move from Tech to IB and have been completely unsuccessful- it's nigh impossible to do this. You can definitely still go on to work at a different firm in IB, but working at GS in Tech or Ops actually makes it considerably more difficult to transition within the firm.

I'm in FIN but I agree it's a long shot...

Having gone through the process successfully, I know for sure that your manager is notified.

Do you think I could not get an offer because of my application?
