Goldman Sachs Switching Divisions: **Current Goldman Employees Reply

Hey I was curious to know how easy it is to switch between divisions once your already in the company, like what if I start in Operations or Finance, how long must I wait before going to say asset management or fixed income? How easy is to switch. What about my position? Like if I spend one year in Finance and then switch to asset management will I be a second year analyst or go back to first year? Well I hope current Goldman employees can help me on this. THanks

So your plan is to break into GS in the BO and move up? Join the line, the very long line. It rarely happens in general unless you're in Market Risk and maybe Treasury and it rarely happens from those divisions as well.

Do a MO or BO stint and go to B school. Many people do it.

Very rarely happens. It takes so much drive and effort to break from BO to FO in the same bank. I agree with bearing, use your BO exp in GS to try and go to FO in other firms (probably the smaller boutiques or MM). If you have a shot at IB at a MM or regional boutique, I will actually take that over BO and then try to go into a BB if thats where you really want to work (these cases are more likely to happen).

you're officially eligible for an internal move after 18 months. though occasionally may see people make the move before then if there is a special reason/business need.

more importan than timing however is what you're actual BO/MO role is and if you have any other skills. not all BO/MO roles are created equally. Some position you better to make a jump to a FO more than others. BO/MO to IBD at GS is tough and I've heard of it happening once, however, know a fair number of folks that have jumped to trading desks, prime brokerage desks, GSAM, and PWM from BO/MO. a lot of it really depends on your ability to build relationships w/the right people, good timing/luck, how relevant your BO/MO role is to the FO position, and if you have a good reputation as a hard/competent worker.
