Got into Bocconi - Now what?

Hello everyone,

I am an Italian student and I was recently admitted to the MSc in Finance at Bocconi University, starting this september.

I come from a small town in southern Italy, and up until a few months ago my most ambitious goal was to get a job at a Big4. I know getting admitted to such a prestigeous program opens up a lot of doors for me, and I want to make the most of it. However, I really know nothing about this "game" :)

Some info:

  • I come from a small city, and during my bachelors I could get absolutely no internship. We only have big4 here and I understand they only hire graduates as interns in my local offices;
  • I would like to emigrate: I'd love to work in Switzerland, but also London would be fine. I'm good with languages so that's not a big problem;
  • I've heard horror stories about IB and I'm pretty sure that's not for me. My dream job doesn't need me to work crazy hours (let's say max 60h a week?) and pays decent money (70k? 80k? I don't really know how good are salaries in Switzerland);
  • I really like asset management

You guys are more well-seasoned. What's your advice? What's the best path I should follow to get an AM job in Switzerland? Is that even possible given my situation?

Thank you very much in advance :)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

Path to Asset Management (AM) in Switzerland

  1. Leverage Bocconi's Reputation:

    • Bocconi University is highly regarded, especially in finance. Use its brand to your advantage when networking and applying for internships and jobs.
  2. Networking:

    • Start building your network early. Attend Bocconi's career fairs, join finance-related student organizations, and connect with alumni working in AM.
    • Utilize LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the AM industry in Switzerland and London.
  3. Internships:

    • Aim for internships during your MSc program. Even if you couldn't secure one during your bachelor's, Bocconi's career services can help you find opportunities.
    • Consider summer internships in AM firms or related fields. This experience is crucial for landing a full-time role post-graduation.
  4. Language Skills:

    • Your proficiency in languages is a significant asset. While English is widely spoken in Switzerland's finance sector, knowing German or French can be beneficial, especially in Zurich or Geneva.
  5. Target Companies:

    • Research and target AM firms that have a presence in Switzerland. Some prominent names include UBS, Credit Suisse, and Pictet.
    • Look for firms that are known to hire international talent and may not require fluency in the local language.
  6. Work-Life Balance:

    • AM roles generally offer a better work-life balance compared to IB. However, be prepared for some demanding periods, especially during market volatility or earnings seasons.
  7. Salary Expectations:

    • Salaries in Switzerland are generally high, but cost of living is also significant. A starting salary in AM can range from CHF 70k to CHF 100k, depending on the firm and your role.
  8. Alternative Locations:

    • If Switzerland proves challenging, consider starting your career in London. The financial sector there is vast, and you can always move to Switzerland later with some experience under your belt.

Action Plan

  • Short-Term:

    • Focus on excelling in your MSc program.
    • Start networking and applying for internships.
    • Attend career fairs and company presentations at Bocconi.
  • Medium-Term:

    • Secure a summer internship in AM.
    • Continue building your network and seek mentorship from professionals in the industry.
  • Long-Term:

    • Aim for a full-time role in AM post-graduation.
    • Consider additional certifications like CFA to boost your credentials.

By following these steps, you can maximize your chances of landing a role in asset management in Switzerland or London. Good luck!
