GS: securities vs GSAM

I'm a bit confused with GS securities division("strategies" sub-division) and GSAM(Goldman Sachs Asset Management) which also has "strategies" sub-division. I'm also a little bit confused of how "securities" organized: description says there's "equities" and "FICC" however application form also has "strategies" sub-division.

Ok I know Securities is a sell-side and GSAM is a buy-side. Whats the difference between buy-side and sell-side strategies??

securities is composed of Equities and Fixed Income. there are strategists within each who help out on the specific desks (commodities strats build wheat models, distressed build high-yield models...etc). there are also some buy-side desks in securities which include the well-known prop desks such as gsps and ssg

GSAM also has a strat group but i believe it may vary as to where you are. some strats are traders themselves in the quantitative alpha groups, but some will serve the same role as helpers

yes but when you apply there are 3 groups: Equities, FICC and Strategies(i guess they just separated "quants" from S&T guys)

Securities:

Strategists use their mathematical and scientific training and work closely with the firm's trading, sales and banking professionals to create financial products, advise clients on transactions, measure risk and identify market opportunities.
GSAM:
Quantitative Investment Strategies uses advanced quantitative methods to systematically uncover and exploit sources of alpha

whats the difference? sounds like "high beta"(market opportunities) vs "high alpha"(market neutral) but i doubt that. buy-side desk in securities? hm... if i wanna make a "quant trader" where shall i apply? Securities->strategies or GSAM?

yes they do but you have to be the best candidates in either securities or IBD to even get an interview. Usually they do first rounds in IBD, pluck the clear top candidates in addition to picking people they had been looking at before.

gsps was more selective than ssg and only 1 person stayed for the entire summer (was from top non-target, stanford/mit).

if you want to be a quant trader i'd suggest joining a quant desk in GSAM
