I will be a SA at a top 50 hedge fund in NYC this year. I am a rising senior, and everyone I have talked to (mostly hedge fund alumni) has highly encouraged me to get my first job at a bank to build broader experience.
Last fall I recruited for banking/ S&T SA and did not get any interviews. I have ~3.3 GPA in econ from a non-target, and prior work experience was in asset mgmt. My school has basically 1 alumnus at every bank, and I am in touch with them, but it doesn't provide much of a broad base for networking.
As a non-target student, what can I do to give myself a chance at a FT spot at a bank? I'm not picky, MM would be fine, S&T would be fine, but my understanding is that I basically need this in order to have a shot at a longer term career. Would you expect someone with my background to be able to find a FT slot assuming plenty of networking?

look at Asset Management roles as well. should be easy to spin your HF summer experience. say you enjoyed investing, but would like to benefit from the training that a large shop like T. Rowe, BlackRock, Fido, Wellington could offer
This is great advice– do you know anything about the recruiting cycle in this? Is it all summer recruitment as at banks?
