Help! I keep getting burned by interviewers with two questions!!!

1 ) How should I explain to interviewers why I want to transition from consulting (TMT) to private equity or investment banking?

2) How do I explain that I only had one intern experience?

Currently about to enter master program next month.

I've only had one internship, and when put against other mainland students with 5-6 internships because they do off cycle gigs while going to school, I seem a bit less experienced. Yet, I am landing interviews because I am from a HYP undergrad school with a top mainland university for a full ride master's.

If it is during face to face calls and not Hirevue shit, just say you learnt about the industry when it was too late for SA recruiting. And that was the only option you had at the time. But since then, you have been learning more and are determined to break into IB/PE.

I had a year of funky self-employed shit (graduated as international right when COVID hit and had to go back home) on my resume from an engineering background with no finance internships. And when I was asked about it while interviewing from an MFin, I literally said "Life gave me lemons and I made lemonade" to a global head at GS and two Sr MDs at top EBs.
Got a referral every time.

You'll be surprised how far honesty gets you - except with HR. Never be honest with HR.
