Help me decide what to do
Hey everyone! I'm a third-year student at a top uni in the EU, going to do a MSc in Finance next year. Sooo... I have no work experience and I have no idea what to do with my life! Probably should've woken up earlier, but it's better late than never.
I have no doubts I want to have a career in finance, and I like both markets and corporate finance. The thing is, I would probably be happy with anything, but I haven't had the chance to experience the long hours and the actual work through internships (and without making up my mind about what I want to do I expect it to be hard to find one).
So, until recently I focused only on IBD, because prestige, exit opps, etc..., without thinking about other professions. While I like the idea of doing dealmaking, I must say I might prefer something more market-oriented (investments).
So, I have the chance to apply to summer internships this year and of course I can't apply to every division. I would like to differentiate a bit but it's probably better to focus on one area.
I was thinking about: IBD, S&T (trading), Equity Research and Asset Management. What's the better route for working in a HF (or Portoflio Manager somewhere)? I think I'd like ER (AM is probably the same at analyst level?) but MiFID II scares me about the future of this career. Work-life balance doesn't really matter much to me at this time, I'd focus more on future opportunities, money, ...
There are some structured Asset Management summer internship in BBs that might be interesting but since I'm not sure maybe an IBD/S&T internship would be a safer choice (though AM might be easier to get?).
Thanks and sorry for the long post.
