HELP WITH NETWORKING

Hi all, had a question about the proper protocol for networking. I work in Risk currently and saw a position at my firm open in IB so I reached out to an analyst on the team and had a great phone call them. They introduced me to an associate and I had an equally great call with them, but apparently I saw the posting a little too late because they already found a candidate for the role.

After they informed me the associate recommended I keep in touch in the coming months with them because the team is growing and if another spot opens they would let me know.

My question is what would be the best way to keep in touch without sounding like a tryhard/being annoying? I asked the analyst for advice and they told me to just follow industry news/keep up to date with deals. This is something I really want and I don't want to mess up the relationship, but want them to know how bad I want it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the advice! Might be obvious but do you think it would be best to find articles related to the team and then ask how that could affect their practice?
