How Americans spend time

I'm sorry but I'm in an article posting mood today...

What gets me is that people who are unemployed don't do something productive. If I were unemployed, I'd be reading charts or learning to write code so I could do something productive. Do these people honestly get paid to watch TV? Do they have cable?!?

Here is the problem. I think the vast amount of unemployed individuals (and by unemployed I mean past 6 months) are those who don't have 4 year degrees or the basic foundation to do what is mentioned above. If you get laid off from the auto factory you aren't going to all of a sudden start learning C++.

What isn't mentioned is how many individuals are trying to go back to school and are being preyed on by Strayer, Phoenix, Devry, etc. All those educational chop shops are selling people on the idea of re educating themselves while straddling them with debt. Personally, I would like to see a partnership with state schools and community colleges to offer people who have lost their jobs in industries that will never come back an opportunity to go to school. Think a revamped NAFTA type education bill.

I also think is is understated how utterly depressing and hopeless it can be to be long term unemployed. Look at how sad, desperate and hopeless some of the posts on this board can be. Try imagining what it must be like to not have a college education or high hopes of IB.

But yeah, cable is the worst thing for people in this situation.
