How Can a French Student Break into Markets Abroad (US/Hong Kong/Singapore)

Hi everyone,

I’m a 23-year-old student currently studying at Université Paris-Dauphine, one of the top French universities in finance. I’m looking for advice on how to build an international career in markets, ideally outside of France, particularly in the US, Hong Kong, or Singapore.

My main goal is to work in Sales & Trading or Global Markets roles, and I’d love to start my career abroad if possible. However, as a French student, the path seems unclear.

Here are my main questions: 1. Can I break in directly, or would I need to complete a master’s program in the US (or another country) first to improve my chances? 2. Is it possible to get a summer internship abroad as a French student, or do I have to go through internal mobility after joining a European bank? 3. Have any of you relocated through your firm (e.g., starting in Paris/London and transferring to Asia or the US)? 4. What are the most realistic and effective strategies to get that first role abroad in Global Markets? 5. Are there banks or firms that are particularly open to international profiles like mine in those regions?

I’m currently about to start a 6-month internship in Cross-Asset Sales – Structured Products at BNP Paribas in Paris, and I’m trying to plan my next moves smartly.

Any advice, experience, or insight would be incredibly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

To break into markets abroad as a French student, particularly in the US, Hong Kong, or Singapore, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Master’s Program Abroad:
Completing a master’s program in the US or another target country can significantly improve your chances. In France, a master’s degree is often a standard requirement for finance roles, and pursuing one abroad can help you build a local network, gain relevant internships, and overcome visa hurdles. Top programs in the US or UK (e.g., LSE, Oxford, or US Ivy Leagues) are particularly valuable for international mobility.

  2. Summer Internships Abroad:
Securing a summer internship abroad is challenging but not impossible. Networking is key—leverage alumni from Université Paris-Dauphine who are working in your target regions. Additionally, some global banks like BNP Paribas, Société Générale, or Credit Agricole may offer opportunities to apply for internships in their international offices. However, be prepared for visa challenges, especially in the US.

  3. Internal Mobility:
Starting in Paris or London and transferring to Asia or the US is a common path. Many French students begin their careers at European banks and later relocate through internal mobility programs. Building strong relationships within your firm and expressing interest in international opportunities early on can help facilitate this.

  4. Strategies for the First Role Abroad:

    • Networking: Attend events, reach out to professionals on LinkedIn, and connect with alumni in your target regions.
    • Target Firms: Focus on banks or firms with a strong international presence and a history of hiring international profiles. Examples include BNP Paribas, Société Générale, HSBC, and global US banks like JPMorgan or Goldman Sachs.
    • Specialization: Develop expertise in areas like structured products or derivatives, which are in demand globally.
    • Language Skills: Highlight your multilingual abilities, especially if you speak Mandarin or another Asian language, as this is highly valued in Hong Kong and Singapore.
  5. Firms Open to International Profiles:
Banks with a global footprint, such as HSBC, Citi, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs, are generally more open to international profiles. In Asia, firms like DBS, Standard Chartered, and Nomura may also be worth exploring. For the US, boutique firms or regional offices of global banks might be more flexible with visa sponsorship.

Your upcoming internship in Cross-Asset Sales at BNP Paribas is a strong starting point. Use this experience to build your technical skills, network internally, and position yourself for future opportunities abroad.

Totally the opposite way since I'm a foreigner in France wish to start my career in EU. For HK/SG, try to talk with french in french banks, there are many of them in HK. Maybe you should leverage more into trading roles.
