How far to negotiate an offer?

Hey all, received an offer which I feel is a low ball offer. Should I attempt to negotiate with HR? If so, how far should I go before just fucking it and saying I am not interested?

My concern here is that if I do indeed get my way after some negotiation, I may piss HR off in the process. Not a good sign even before joining a firm?

Thanks.

If this is in NYC, since they're not supposed to ask how much you are/were making, I'd say definitely negotiate. As long as you reason* with them they won't be pissed at you. There are enough resources online and on this website to get a good idea of a high-end number for you. At the end of the day you're not going to be working in HR right? They'd rather secure you now and not have to do any more work because let's face it, they're mostly lazy *ucks.
