How much leverage can an academic advisor provide?
Currently, I am attending a small non-target liberal arts college. However, my institution has seen several alumni break into investment banking (IB). This has led me to wonder about the extent to which my finance advisor can assist in securing IB internships. I am curious about your experiences with non-target schools and the impact their career services centers or academic advisors have had on your career trajector
Based on the most helpful WSO content, academic advisors can indeed provide some leverage, but the extent of this can vary greatly. They can guide you on course selection, provide advice on career paths, and sometimes even connect you with alumni or other professionals in the field. However, the real game-changer, especially for non-target schools, is your own initiative.
In my experience, networking is key to any career in finance. At a liberal arts college, you might have to work a bit harder, but it's definitely possible. My college maintained a list of alumni with careers in finance that I leveraged weekly. Keeping a constant stream of inquiries with alumni and professionals will build your network quickly. I've also noticed that alumni of small non-target schools fight for each other on the buy and sell side.
Finding a mentor can also be incredibly beneficial. I lucked out freshman year and happened to meet a partner of a huge investment management firm at a pre-law mixer. While all of your connections will provide guidance, finding one that you particularly connect with will pay massive dividends.
Remember, a lot of undergrads say that they want to be in banking or at a hedge fund, but aren't motivated to put in the work for the GPA or experience. Outwork them and the college next door.
So, while your academic advisor can provide some assistance, your own efforts in networking, finding a mentor, and working hard will be the most crucial factors in securing an IB internship.
