How to get a 3 or 4 week unofficial internship?
Hi, I am currently working on a non finance related internship that will end the last week of July. I have til the end of august before I need to go back to school. I am trying to ascertain ANY finance related internship, could be pwm, pe, prop shop, boutiques etc. for the 3 or 4 weeks before I need to go back to school. Obviously pay is not important. I will be in nyc so any place in the city will be great.
How would I go about doing this? Would large BBs have programs like this or would there be too much red tape there. If I want to contact small boutiques, prop shops etc how can I get a list of these firms that's near the city? I will be searching through alumnis on linkedin today so hopefully that will help.
Has anyone done anything like this before? if so how did you guys get the opportunity?

I don't really know much about such short term hiring but here's my 2 cents.
It's good that you have such desire and interest, but when firms hire interns, they do it for themselves. It sounds like you're seeking some finance experience and credentials to better YOURSELF. Now what does the firm hiring you get out of your 3-4 weeks? By the time you're trained and ready to work you're already outta there.
Yea I suppose this is somewhat presumptuous of me, but with economic climate of today I have to try and get something before the summer is for naught. I have contacted a couple of alumnus.
In the email to the alumnus, I simply mentioned that I was interested in the industry and that I would love to speak to them more about it. Do you think this is good or should I include my desire for a short term shadowing/internship opportunity?
I have contacted few alumnus thus far so I can have a chance to fix the emails.
I am doing my best to try and prepare myself so I can be useful. I am reading a textbook on Financial Engineering, about to go through the vault and wso guide on finance etc. lol basicaly I'm willing to climb through the gutters.
To be honest, I don't think you should contact alumni at all. CarolinaHeels12 is right, the firm would get little from hiring you for such a short period of time, in fact they might even lose resources just trying to train you. Thus, you should try to preserve your goodwill with your alumni network and save the legit emails for the bigger full-summer internships and full-time offers.
For now, try to keep it within your personal network. Friends of parents, very recent alumni (that you actually went to school with) at boutique shops, etc.
Another option would be to look for something near your college town and continue to work there part time after school starts.
