How to move from Brazil to Miami?

I am studying in Brazil and I am a Corporate Development intern for a tech company in Brazil and my dream is to eventually move to Miami. If possible I would like to work in investment management or in a regional investment banking shop, but I open to other opportunities. What is the best way to achieve this goal? I know an MBA is always a solution but I wouldn’t like to do it, only if it’s the only way.

To move from Brazil to Miami and pursue a career in investment management or at a regional investment banking shop, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Language Skills:

    • Miami has a strong focus on Latin America (LATAM) business, so fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is a significant advantage. This will make you more competitive for roles in investment management or regional IB shops.
  2. Investment Banking Opportunities in Miami:

    • Investment banking in Miami is limited. There are a few boutique firms, but full-time offers are rare and often need-based. Some shops in nearby areas like Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach may recruit for full-time roles, but timing and availability can be unpredictable.
  3. Private Equity and Hedge Funds:

    • Miami has a surprising number of private equity (PE) and hedge fund (HF) shops, often due to tax advantages and weather. However, most investment positions are lateral hires from well-known banks. Entry-level opportunities exist but are limited.
  4. Corporate Finance and LATAM Headquarters:

    • Many companies have their LATAM headquarters in Miami, offering roles in corporate finance. However, pay in South Florida tends to be lower relative to the high cost of living.
  5. Alternative to an MBA:

    • While an MBA is a common pathway, it’s not the only option. To avoid an MBA, focus on:
      • Networking: Build connections with professionals in Miami through LinkedIn, industry events, and informational interviews. Networking is critical for breaking into boutique firms or PE/HF shops.
      • National Career Fairs: Attend career fairs in the U.S. that cater to finance roles. These can help you connect with firms that may not recruit directly in Miami.
      • Skill Development: Enhance your technical skills in financial modeling, valuation, and investment analysis. Consider certifications like the CFA to boost your profile.
      • Internships: Explore internships in Miami or nearby cities to gain local experience and build a network.
  6. Visa Considerations:

    • Research visa options like the H-1B or O-1 for specialized workers. Some firms may sponsor visas, but this is more common for larger companies or highly skilled roles.
  7. Relocation Strategy:

    • Start by targeting firms with a LATAM focus or those that value your bilingual skills. Highlight your corporate development experience and how it aligns with their needs.
    • Consider roles in corporate finance or investment management as a stepping stone while continuing to network for IB or PE/HF opportunities.

By focusing on networking, skill-building, and targeting LATAM-focused firms, you can position yourself for a successful move to Miami without necessarily pursuing an MBA.
