How to Pitch Yourself

I recently graduated from a top 10 university but was unable to get a FT job. I landed a phone interview and was asked why I didn't have a job yet and was completely stumped. I tried to spin it in by saying that I hadn't yet found a match with a firm yet but was stumbling all over the place.

Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle a question like this? Thanks!

Well it's weird you say Top Ten school but there was no on campus recruiting. That sounds funny. Is this a top ten lib arts school? Or did less companies come on campus than in the past because of the market?

Anyway tell them you interned but due to market conditions they didnt keep ANY interns after the summer and so you've been applying but the market is tough right now (it is) and you re hoping to get in front of someone to discuss this role because you're very interested in learning more and possibly contributing to the team.
