How to transition to FP&A from Corporate Accounting

After months of trying to transition, i came with no success in trying to transition to FP&A from accounting. Most of the headhunters i talked to seem to answer their questions the same way by "Our clients are only looking for min. 2 years experience in FP&A. However, I do have couple Senior Accountant positions for you". It is really frustrating because i want to get out of accounting and be more involved in analysis of financial statements. I currently have 3 years of corporate accounting experience. Anyone who made the jump, can you guys share your tips/experience on how you made the transition?

Accountants move to FP&A all the time. Are you from the Big 4? Everyone there gets FP&A offers constantly. You should start networking and applying online, or double take a look at your resume.

I would say start by networking - think of people you know and can talk to in FP&A. HAve them look over your resume for any red flags. Next, look at online postings. If you came from a F150 - then you should be able to move in an FP&A role at another F150 - if not, try a firm in the same industry but lower on the F500 list. Barring that, get a credential. Are you a CPA?

Any luck? I see that this post is pretty old but if you’re still looking to transition I would say it’s fairly easy especially since you have a heavy accounting background. I started as an analyst at a start up company then did IT Consulting. I didn’t like IT Consulting at all and eventually transitioned to a FP&A analyst after being in IT Consulting for about 10 months. I would say you almost need an accounting background to even be considered in FPA so I don’t see it being too hard to transition. Maybe you’re looking in the wrong places and I would heavily advise that you keep applying and as long as you know how to talk and sell yourself In your interviews you should be fine. Also the financial modeling courses on BIWS are mainly for people trying to break into IB,PE,VC,HF. I’m taking those classes right now as I want to learn more about valuation and transactions.
