I can't tell if this MD is "helping me" or not. Anyone?

Hi guys,

Non-target junior here looking for a BB IB SA who has an influential connection at a BAML/DB/UBS/BARCAP with a title like Head of M&A / Global Head of XXX Group, etc. Needless to say, he's a big shot at the firm's investment bank.

Anyways, I contacted him today to just check in and to see if he's heard any news or updates on the recruiting front. He asked me for my resume about a month ago so I figure it's a good time to check in. He tells me that interviews will be tight for the summer and that I should hear back whether I got selected later this month. And then he asks me if I applied online and if I cast my net wide on other banks too.

He very kindly answers back my questions within less than 5 minutes and answers these emails in a "casual", text message like tone using words like 'u' instead of 'you' and that I've been very smart in the process and etc...

So in summary, he's being very supportive and receptive to answering questions despite being one of if not the most influential guys in the firm's investment bank (i.e. BUSY). But the question remains... Do you think the guy sent HR my resume? Or did he just ask for my resume in the beginning to take a look? Why did he ask if I applied on the website? Why did he say interview slots are tight?

Do you guys think he submitted the resume or no? Sorry for the long read...

why why why why. What good does asking us any of this do for you? Your worrying is doing you no good. You will find out when you find out. The fact that he told you to cast your net wide is probably an indication that you aren't likely to get a job there if he mentioned interviews being tight. If I wanted to tell someone they probably wont get an interview at this time, that is how I would break it to them. You should do exactly as he said, cast your net wide. Don't worry about interviewing there until you find out if you actually have an interview there.

If he asked for your resume that means he probably saw it.

I am in no way trying to be mean. Just being honest.

In the same spot, head of his group big shot at a BB and he told me he passed my resume along to the head of recruiting and also said to be looking at different firms to spread a wide net. Clearly he is not going to be able to get you a job, but maybe even if his firm does not work out for you he hopes you can get a banking job at another firm. I think he is just being realistic with you in the fact that him referring you for a job is not going to get you one.
