I’m being let go. What do I do next?

I’ve been with my firm for three years in an IB-adjacent role. I was recently informed that I will likely be let go in June. My current group has said they’ll try to help me find another position internally, but I’m not confident they’ll follow through in any meaningful way.

The situation has been taking a serious toll on my mental health. The combination of long hours, the knowledge that I’m being phased out, and the pressure to prepare for interviews has been overwhelming. My role is highly specialized, so I’d need to do significant studying to transition elsewhere. My doctor has raised concerns about the impact on my well-being and has suggested I take a medical leave of absence. Personally, I feel incredibly burned out and would welcome a break to focus on rest and interview preparation for external opportunities.

As I see it, I have three options:

1. Stay the course – Push through until June, accept the reduced bonus, and hope something internal materializes before the pressure breaks me.

2. Take medical leave – Step away to prioritize my health and prepare for what’s next. This would likely mean closing the door to internal opportunities and facing potential gossip if I don’t secure a role before the leave ends.

3. Resign now – Leave on my own terms, accept a gap on my resume, and free myself from the strain of the current job.

What path would you recommend?

If I were you, I would accept their help, but also recruit on your own to try and find something you're passionate about.

You've seen the job numbers...looking for a new job in this worsening environment might cause more damage to your mental health than what you're doing currently...unless you have a trust fund or a sugar daddy/mama situation going on
