Immigrant looking for a prospective Finance career
TL;DR: (27y) Immigrant looking for advice on shifting to a career in finance in the US from IT
Hello, I am a Finance grad student moving to the US in about a year for my MS (Finance) and planning to move into high finance roles in summer 2026. I am 27 years old and will be 29 by graduation. I have a background in IT; however, I am interested in finance and equity markets and am in the transition process of moving into this field because IT is not interesting to me anymore.
I understand from multiple forums and discussions that IB or the 'elite' roles in high finance are not for me as I have a mountain of basic requirements that I would not be able to scale up - I'm not from a target school (completely non-target), immigrant, my age and irrelevant background (IT).
I have tried the WSO odds calculator, which shows I have a less than 1% chance of being accepted into high finance roles in the US. My current GPA is 3.5, and I aim to push it higher. I need advice as this will be a very difficult time for me, and I need to know what I should focus on to get a good offer and visa sponsorship (If I can get one). I understand this is a very generic question, and it all depends on my performance and whether the org is willing to sponsor me. I would not get into the top tier 'S' or A' grade firms; I have to aim for lower, but I am in the dark regarding my career path in the US as this is a significant risk I've taken with a lot of uncertainty. I've seen a lot of fruitful discussions here, so I'd like to get some advice from anyone in the field and/or anyone who sits in the role of hiring 'Monkeys'.
Currently, I am working on multiple courses on M&A, Financial modelling and financial analytics apart from my course plan and plan to take up CFA at the end of 2025. Is Financial analytics going to be a bonus since I have an IT background or is this common knowledge for grads in the US?
