Incoming Freshman Interested In Energy, but I don't know where to start?

I am going to a T-10 school an concentrating in Resource/Energy Economics. Honestly I know 0 and I'm just starting to do my research, but I wondering if for IB internships they hire students to work in certain industries or if it doesn't really matter? What other finance roles should I be looking into as someone with a specific concentration like this? I'm just trying to get started understanding what I should be looking for in terms of internships for the next couple of years.

The Houston banking groups love to see previous energy experience on your resume going into Junior summer recruiting. With that said, try your best to have as much energy-specific (if you know that is what you want to do) experience under your belt over the next few years.

It will be hard to find an energy investment banking gig before sophomore summer at the absolute earliest. Instead, try to intern in a finance-related role at a reputable energy company. Ideally this would be a role between sophomore and junior year in Houston that exposes you to Excel, PowerPoint, and industry specifics. Also, by being in Houston, you’ll be able to grab coffee and network with the investment banks during the summer.

If you don’t want to do IB, there are still plenty of good opportunities in the energy finance space. For example, you could look into a trading role at a large company like Exxon or BP. Similarly, most of the super majors have structured financial development programs that might be attractive. For example, Chevron’s Finance Development Program (FDP) might be of interest to you if you have a desire to work in California. You could also work at an independent if a huge corporation isn’t your thing.

But yeah with all that in mind just try to learn as much about the industry as possible and eventually get industry experience on your resume. Most of all though, relax and enjoy freshman year.
