Informal interview follow-up
I have been reading posts from WSO for quite some time, and find that some valuable advice and insight can be gained by asking a question to the WSO community.
So here's my first:
Last week, instead of going to the beaches in Mexico with my friends on spring break, I went on a job hunting trip in NYC in anticipation for my graduation in May. (Yes I realize the positions I seek are already filled by now.) I had some very good meetings and interviews that I set up through contacts. In particular, I felt that one meeting that seemingly became an interview or superday of sorts went very well.
It was at a BB on their fixed income S&T floor, where I met with several associates and a few directors. They were very complimentary of me and I really felt in my element there. Some of the people I spoke with even said that my contact that invited me was known for getting jobs for people.
After getting back home two days later, I sent thank you emails to all of the acquaintances that gave me their business cards. That was on Monday, and now on Friday I've yet to receive any sort of response. I understand that if I were to be hired as an analyst they would need to find room for me, being that I was not part of the formal recruiting process. So, optimistically thinking, I can only hope my contact is working to find a place in the program for me.
My questions now are: Did I do anything wrong from what's been described that would result in no response from anyone? Or, is it possible that some corporate screen did not allow my email to get through (from .edu email)? What might you suggest I do at this point to follow up persistently yet avoiding being an annoyance?
All advice is much appreciated. Thanks!
Seems like you're doing the right things here, but realistically, there is a very small chance you'll land something so late in the ball game (especially at the BBs, you might have a shot at boutiques). You're e-mail most likely went through, but people are busy and may forget to respond even if they meant to, so don't worry about that. Just keep in touch with these people and hopefully if something opens up, you'll be on their minds. Of course, if they don't respond to your e-mails multiple times, then move on to someone else... networking can be frustrating at times, but remember that all you need is one person to give you a chance.
So they didn't write back saying "you're welcome"? Moving forward, don't expect people to respond to "thank you" emails, a reply is the exception not the rule.
