Interning at Merrill Edge

Hey everyone,

I accepted an offer to intern at Merrill Edge. I' m worried this is going to set me onto a strict track to financial advising. I know financial advising can be salesy. I'm hoping that taking this position will get my foot in the door to get into other positions in Bank of America. I'm a double major of Finance and Management Info systems.

Am I doomed to stay in financial advising after this??

Absolutely not.

With how competitive finance is, you take what you can get. Is breaking into IB going to be harder for you than it is for someone who interned at GS this summer? Yes. However, that doesn't mean you're stuck anywhere.

Financial advising may not be the most glamorous but you'd be surprised what you can spin during an interview. Try to milk what you can out of this and think of ways to twist it into an experience that would sound good to an interviewer in your dream role.

If you're really worried, start doubling your networking efforts as well and reach out to people at BofA. If you network hard enough, you won't have to compensate as much come next summer. I've heard Merrill Edge runs a good program though so I wouldn't worry too much.
