Internship for Rising College Freshman
I'm currently a high school senior looking for a summer internship; however, I've been dual enrolled at Boston University over the past two years.
Relevant coursework includes Python, Java, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Applied Statistics, Number Theory, Physics, and Macroeconomics. I have 52 credits in college coursework (each class is 4 credits).
I've been writing for Seeking Alpha and have written for The Motley Fool. Many of my extracurriculars are business and technology oriented.
Keeping all this in mind, are there any financial firms near Boston ideally, but perhaps near Philly or NYC that would be willing to let me intern?
It's always a sad day when I read about a kid not even in college who is more qualified for my job than I am...
jesus just take the summer and have some fun bro ur already more qualified than half of the COLLEGE graduates i've seen
keep following the market and writing for SA, thats solid, and worry about internships for your freshman year summer (im assuming you're going to a target with that kind of resume)
if you get a solid freshman year analyst role, you'll be gucci
call me maybe bro. i'll hook you up
Anybody else?
Given that you're only a rising college freshman, your only options are probably to network (maybe your parents or relatives know someone that works in finance) or to cold email firms. Also since you are young and don't have too much value to offer, do not expect to get paid. When you are networking and emailing places, make it clear that you are willing to work without compensation otherwise it'll be nearly impossible to find someone willing to hire you.
Keep in mind that even though you are impressive for your age, it will be a very uphill battle to obtain internships and work experience for the next couple of years given your age. Be very persistent when pursuing opportunities. I sent 400+ job applications out the summer before my sophomore year before I could land an internship for that summer. The earlier you get some experience the better, as it will snowball and help significantly for future opportunities
Side note: Don't let some of the other guys in this thread keep you down. You're on a great path and keep hustling
Do you think it'd be more valuable to continue my paying job as a Seeking Alpha writer or be an unpaid intern at a financial firm on my resume later on?
Think about it from an employer's perspective - which experience would more directly display your ability to perform a job at their company? Probably the direct financial experience, even if it's not in the exact field you want it.
Obviously, since the finance internship will likely be unpaid, personal finances could be a concern. If you need the cash, stick with the writing. If you can afford to work unpaid for a little while, try and get some experience that you can use to jump to a better position next time.
Unless your finances are a concern, don't think too much into the paid vs unpaid stuff. Working an unpaid internship at a financial form will increase your future potential with later jobs. There's no shame in working an unpaid internship to get useful experience/skills since you're likely too young for a full-on internship
