Is BB IB Even Possible for me anymore ??
Was at MBB for two years, and now have been at a startup for a year.
Was really interested in PE but was a failure (have come close in a number of processes but I guess it just sucks to suck).
Would it be at all possible to become an analyst at BB? I am still really interested in PE, and would very happily start at analyst 1 to try and make the move still, but seems like doors are just closed at this point
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning to a BB IB analyst role after your current path is challenging but not impossible. Here's what you need to consider:
Breaking into BB IB: While it's rare for someone with your background (MBB > Startup) to enter as an Analyst 1, it's not unheard of. You'd need to aggressively network, target middle-market (MM) or boutique banks first, and then lateral to a BB. Many threads suggest that starting at an MM or boutique is a more realistic entry point, especially given your non-traditional path.
PE Aspirations: If PE is still your ultimate goal, you could also consider targeting lower middle-market PE firms directly. Some firms are more open to candidates with diverse backgrounds, especially if you can demonstrate strong financial modeling skills and deal experience.
Alternative Pathways: Another viable route is pursuing an MBA at a top-tier program. This could reset your career trajectory and open doors to BB IB Associate roles, which can still lead to PE exits.
Challenges: Be prepared for skepticism from recruiters about your commitment to IB, given your non-linear path. You'll need to craft a compelling narrative about why you're passionate about IB and how your unique experiences add value.
Action Plan:
While the path is steep, persistence, preparation, and a clear strategy can help you break in. If you're open to starting at a smaller firm and working your way up, the doors aren't entirely closed.

TBH no. Quite frankly it'd be a step back in your career. Keep recruiting for PE if you want, or just do some other post-MBB thing.
Is PE even possible at this point ??
Why do you want to do IB lol? Going from MBB to IB (even BB or EB) is kind of a downgrade and raises red flags
I think this is pretty false, I don’t think people consider IB or MBB better, just apples vs oranges, but I definitely think going back to an IB analyst would be a huge downgrade…
Fair question. Answer:
People far overestimate how easy it is to go from consulting to PE, when I found it to be a lot more difficult. By hopping to IB, the hope would be that I could more easily land a MM PE spot or something like that
