A target is a school where certain employers (such as investment banks and consulting companies) regularly come to interview students on campus via OCR (On Campus Recruiting). Carnegie Mellon is a great school ... but most of the top ibanking/consulting companies don't recruit there heavily or at all. CMU hovers somewhere between semi-target and non target for top and mid-tier analyst programs.

I would argue that CMU is definitely a target, as early every BB recruits there consistently for both FT and Intern positions, unarguably a Target for Trading, as some of the best prop trading firms recruit ON CAMPUS there like Jane Street, Jump, Geneva etc. as well as Barclays and a few others, also as a sidenote, tepper is tied with penn for highest average starting salary undergrad, this is because of the financiers

Oh no, not another target thread.

CMU is a semi target. Lets just say that. Not as easy to get into IB as say Duke, not as hard as say University of Florida. Well respected comp sci department, solid business school, amazing MSCF program. If you go to CMU you should be able to get interviews at BB's with a solid resume and some networking.

Someone please tell me how CMU is not at the very least a semi target.

Not even 1 McKinsey? Or Bain? Or BCG?

I am a proud CMU alum. Carnegie Mellon is much more of a target for Trading, not so much for IB.

I know people who I went to school with who got into IB at Lehman (now @ Nomura), UBS, Wachovia (now @ Wells Fargo), PNC, CIBC, and Citi. Are the numbers high? No. Maybe like 2-3 people at most at each firm. It's not like Morgan Stanley where I saw > 50% of the IB SA class from Wharton.

Goldman and Morgan do not hire IB from Carnegie Mellon. Goldman only hires for Ops and IT from CMU.

They are not a target school and have little opportunity for internships because of their location. Pittsburgh is known for two things(no, not poverty and suffering), but biotechnology and education.

Stay closer to the east coast

chill out you'll be fine. CM is a good name and if you rock your grades you stand a good chance of getting a great job out of college. The market will hopefully be hotter, too. This wallstreetwhartonite guy saying little opportunity for internships does not know what the fuck he is talking about. He went to wharton and is shitting on CM because wharton is #1. It is what it is.

That said, I went to a shitty state school and have a fucking awesome job. ROI bitches, $$$

How much money do 2nd year banking associates make? I don't doubt you, but i'm just curious

I'm not going to state my yearly comp, but suffice it to say I am 25 ys old, own a home in the suburbs, and feel financially secure enough to start a family in a few months. Just chasing my slice of the american dream.

And you, my oh-so-wise young lad, sound exactly like the type of analyst that would never even get an offer at my shop in the first place. The flawed logic and false assumptions abound.

That said, I generally don't stoop to tit-for-tat's with demoralized, jaded analysts like yourself. In fact, just writing this post has caused a touch of back ache. So please don't expect a response to another one of your wasteful comments.

A rather immature reply for someone who's apparently no longer a "young lad"...

You definitely put me in my place. I find it amusing that every clown like yourself goes to the trouble of repsonding and telling me you "normally" don't do this. Call me when you are looking for a buyside job in a couple of years.

Tepper is a great school and will give you all the tools to land a position. Tepper does not have as large of a presence as Wharton, but it's well respected and has a decent presence. My opinion is that the prestige of the school is on the rise.

Anyway try to learn about what Investment Bankers do for a living. The CMU Comp Finance program is awesome, but the curriculum is not meant for bankers. It is meant for traders. Anyway congrats on Tepper it is a great school and you have plenty of time on your hands. Networking will be key, and getting a Sophomore internship will really help to set you apart.

Thank you for the reply!

I'm walking the fence between investment banking and quant work (and who knows how my preferences will change over 4 years).

I've heard that it isn't a good idea to get a BS in Computational Finance due to its extremely focused nature and inadequate training for work relative to Masters degrees offered in grad school. Can anyone comment on this?

I love CMU. It is one of those schools which has a very strong niche. Network and you will be fine. Plenty of great finance firms in pgh to intern with and CMU is very well respected in that city.

That sounds great! Reading around it seems that I'm "doomed" to trading at Tepper and FO positions at BB are out of my reach. Sounds like I have to network and pull the right strings, as they do place 5 or 6 IB analysts every year...
