Is it ever too late to send a thank you email post interview?

Had an interview last Tuesday and forgot to send a thank you email to my interviewers. I would like to follow up with them as I was told I would hear back within 1-2 weeks. Can I follow up with them and also thank them for their time? Something among these lines of me thanking them for their time, and then express that I look forward to hearing back from them regarding next steps. Or should I just send a thank you email without asking for a follow up? And if a thank you is still ok, should I acknowledge it has been over a week and apologize/tell them I've been busy with school? Which is why I overlooked this in the first place...just forgot. Need some guidance here please... This is for a commercial real estate brokerage analyst position.
