Is it over for me?

I am a sophomore at Florida State class of 26 graduating with a bs and MSF. I have had one internship at a private equity shop near me at school and one IB internship at a small bank here at home. I am going into my junior year and I still don’t have a position for summer 25, where do I go now. I scroll through LinkedIn and see all of the people with their offers and I know that recruiting for next summer is essentially over so I just want to get your guys input on what steps I should take so that I can still land a good position out of college, preferably boutique. Should I just begin preparing for FT interviews, looking into other careers like big 4 M&A advisory, maybe pursue an MBA? I’m sad to say but I’m lost right now because I’ve been dead set on IB since I began college, but it just doesn’t seem to be panning out the way I thought it would. All advice is welcome

Bro, it's only over when you quit. I have seen folks in their late 20's break in as An1 from other industries or from a MSF/MFin.

Maybe do not do a MSF there, I am not aware of strength of Florida State, but there are a lot stronger MSF/MFin programs that feed in to IB. Can't you graduate with a BS and do another MSF if you can't land FT?

In the mean time, recruit for FT. Keep networking - network with senior folks as you get more comfortable to ask for advice in your situation and not just analysts like for SA. If you can impress someone senior with your skill, one strong referral and you're in if you can interview well technically and fit in with most folks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps you can take to improve your chances of landing a good position out of college:

  1. Networking:

    • Reach out to alumni from your school, especially those in the finance industry. Networking can often open doors that online applications cannot.
    • Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the industry. Send personalized messages explaining your situation and asking for advice or informational interviews.
  2. Apply Broadly:

    • Don't limit yourself to just IB roles. Consider applying to positions in Big 4 M&A advisory, transaction services, or even mid-office roles at larger banks. These positions can provide valuable experience and can be a stepping stone to your desired role.
    • Check job boards, company career pages, and recruitment websites like LinkedIn, Monster, and Indeed regularly.
  3. Prepare for Full-Time Interviews:

    • Start preparing for full-time recruiting now. This includes refining your resume, practicing your interview skills, and staying updated on industry trends.
    • Consider enrolling in interview prep courses or bootcamps, such as those offered by WSO, to sharpen your skills.
  4. Consider an MBA:

    • If you feel that your current trajectory isn't aligning with your goals, pursuing an MBA can be a good option. An MBA can provide you with additional networking opportunities, internships, and a chance to reset your career path.
  5. Stay Persistent and Positive:

    • Remember that the journey to landing a job in IB or any competitive field can be challenging and may require persistence. Keep applying, networking, and improving your skills.
  6. Explore Unpaid or Smaller Roles:

    • If you're struggling to find a paid position, consider unpaid internships or roles at smaller, lesser-known firms. These experiences can still be valuable and can lead to better opportunities in the future.
  7. Leverage Your Current Experience:

    • Highlight your previous internships in private equity and IB in your applications. Emphasize the skills and knowledge you gained and how they make you a strong candidate for future roles.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of landing a good position out of college and continue working towards your goal of a career in investment banking or a related field.
