Is Networking in the UK a thing?

Hey guys and gals, For those in the industry just curious what are people's experiences with networking in the UK. I don't want to email loads of people to chat if it's not a common practice there, or it'll lead nowhere (I know 99% leads nowhere).

It doesn't usually end up in referrals/isn't an expected part of the recruiting process unlike in the US. For some small places (CVP type banks/small boutiques, not Laz/Roth size) it can be fruitful. You don't need to fullsend it to get interviews (it won't get you them unlike the states) but reaching out on Linkedin is good because you need to demonstrate why you want to apply to the firm. You need to speak to people there to answer that.

In my personal exp, networking was the biggest contributor to my overall knowledge of the industry and the careers involved. I have a genuine curiosity for meeting people and learning from their experiences. This has led to meaningful relationships over a number of years. Others will have a different view but I did not approach "networking" solely to open doors for me, despite it leading to opportunities over time.

I am a mentor to a few junior folks. One of my mentees managed to move from BO in a BB into IBD via internal networking, and another managed to land a FO Analyst position in a PE fund fresh out of uni via LinkedIn.

I think it might be a fair statement to say that networking is a less common path in London, thus slightly increasing your chances of success as you will appear very motivated and interested if you take this approach. The important thing is that you do your research and don’t make a fool of yourself!
