Is this a pointless e-mail?

What's up fellow monkeys,

So basically I just applied for a job that I found through a company's website ("bigger" type company, ~5000 employees). Let's say that after that I checked my school's alumni database to see if there were any alumni currently employed there. Now if I were to have found one, would an e-mail along these lines to him/her be kosher?

"Dear Mr./Ms. WSO,

I recently applied for a job at XYZ and noticed through xxxx University's alumni database that you are currently employed there. I was just curious if you had any advice for anything I could do to better be able to get an interview? Thanks for your time.

Sincerely, The GoldmanBallSachs"

Couple more points. School is a private non-target. Said alumnus is VP+ status (not exactly like a peer). Unfortunately alumnus isn't in the exact group, so it'd b like a tech IBD alumnus and an industrials IBD position for example (not ideal but I don't exactly have the deepest alumni base). So.....Pointless e-mail, let HR do their thing? Can't hurt, go for it? Any of you non-targets higher up at a company, would you ignore something like this or actually give it a push somehow?

Oh and one last thing, this isn't an e-mail I normally would even consider but after applying to literally countless resume drops I've hit that point that you either have a force on the inside or don't even waste your time.

No matter what kind of email you sent, always follow up with a call. People tend to ignore emails. Good luck.
