Is this offer the right choice?

Hello all, this is my first post but feel I need to be pointed in the right direction. Better yet, I feel I need to hear unbiased/external opinions. I have received a job offer from a small (10-50 headcount) boutique bank across the country from me. I feel taking the offer is obviously the best choice, but is there an argument that its not?

Background: Non-target undergrad with non-direct internship experience. Currently at large BB working in business ops team.

Concern: Is this offer the right choice to take? I have been trying to get into an IB role since my junior year of college, and it is finally here after all the hard work but I am hesitating a bit. I am currently working in an ops role doing work that I do not mind now, but I know its not where I want to be down the road. I have been here for about a year and have been slowly reaching out and connecting with bankers and various teams, trying to get my name through the door to no avail. I am very grateful to have made it through the interview process and to receive this offer, but I feel I am stressing too much about this jump. Should I keep doing what I am doing and hope there is an internal opportunity? The base pay is similar but I would be moving across the U.S. and feel I would lose job security. Am I right to worry about this security and future economic conditions rattling a smaller firm to the point of leaning out the team? Also, would a small boutique bank experience be of benefit to me down the road if I decide I want to try and come back to a similar-sized bank that I am currently at? This might seem like a stupid post, but this is such a pivotal moment for me personally and I cannot understand why I am hesitating so much. I would appreciate any advice, for either choice, or other, thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider regarding your decision to accept the offer from the boutique bank:

Pros of Accepting the Boutique IB Offer:

  1. Transaction Experience:

    • Moving to a boutique bank will provide you with direct transaction experience, which is crucial if you aim to transition into roles like Private Equity (PE) or Corporate Development (Corp Dev) in the future. This experience is often more valuable than staying in a non-transactional role.
  2. Career Progression:

    • As highlighted in previous WSO threads, starting at a boutique can be a stepping stone. You can always try lateraling to a larger bank or another firm after gaining some experience (6 months to a year). This initial experience can open doors that are currently closed to you.
  3. Work-Life Balance and Culture:

    • Some users have reported better work-life balance and a more laid-back culture at boutique banks compared to larger firms. If you value a positive work environment, this could be a significant benefit.

Cons and Concerns:

  1. Compensation:

    • Compensation at boutique banks can be lower compared to larger firms. However, this is often offset by the valuable experience you gain. For example, one user mentioned starting at a boutique with a $60,000 all-in salary, which is considered standard for such roles.
  2. Job Security:

    • Smaller firms can be more vulnerable to economic downturns, which might affect job security. This is a valid concern, especially if you are moving across the country and leaving a stable position.
  3. Exit Opportunities:

    • While boutique experience is valuable, it might not carry the same brand recognition as larger firms. However, the hands-on experience can still be a strong selling point when applying for future roles.

Recommendations:

  • Evaluate Your Long-Term Goals:

    • If your ultimate goal is to work in IB, PE, or Corp Dev, gaining transaction experience at a boutique bank is a critical step. Staying in an ops role at a BB might not provide the necessary experience to make this transition.
  • Consider the Cultural Fit:

    • Reflect on what kind of work environment you thrive in. If you prefer a more relaxed culture with potentially better work-life balance, a boutique might be a better fit.
  • Plan for the Future:

    • Accepting the boutique offer doesn't mean you are locked in forever. Use this opportunity to build your resume and network, and consider lateraling to a larger firm if needed.

In summary, while there are valid concerns about compensation and job security, the transaction experience and potential career progression benefits of accepting the boutique IB offer could outweigh these drawbacks. If your goal is to break into IB and eventually move into PE or Corp Dev, this offer seems like a strong step in the right direction.
