JOB ADVICE - Currently a stockbroker

How does one become a junior trader?

I have:
BA in Finance from FAU
Series 7
Series 63

I am currently a stockbroker and I do like the money making potential, but I really want to understand the product I'm pushing. Anyone out there a junior trader? Like it? How did you become one?

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend the trading route since most shops are going algorithmic/electronic. Nevertheless, I had two stints in trading as an intern prior to transitioning into IB. You could try looking at some prop shops (if they have a good training program), this will enable you to actually trade whatever products you want as opposed to just taking orders from clients. Although, many don't make it past a year in prop trading because of money constraints.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I was also looking into other positions as well.. What do you do in IB?

I really want to know how to use the trading software, learn strategies, and really overall learn how to read charts and graphs so I can truly understand the content. Oh... and I also want to get PAID. lol

Being a broker puts me in position to make money, but I prefer to be an advisor because that seems to be more of a relationship based deal.... but to my understanding if you're not in a rich family or have years of experience this isn't a good route for a young guy (25 years). So I also looked into starting as an internal wholesaler....

Any suggestions??

I gotcha man - you'll defiantly learn all you need to know about candlestick charts should you go into trading (may not be a bad idea to look into them prior to seeking jobs). It seems like should also look into equity research, or wealth management. If you choose to look into equity research, i'd also suggest looking into the CFA designation. Yeah, wealth management is touch when you don't have many connections. However, if you pursue a wealth management at MS or a ML type firm you'll have a lot more access to resources.

Thanks a bunch for the advice..

I definitely want my CFA designation, but what do you mean by resources w/ ML and MS. Also, how would a guy like myself get into equity research... Seems like that job pays very well..

I live in Long Island just 30 minutes outside of NYC.
