Job search has me lost and losing hope
As the title states, I’m on month 6 of looking for a job after finishing up my MBA program (no experience prior to MBA program due to starting immediately after undergrad due to athletics). I honestly don’t even know where to begin when writing this, but I’ve hit my limit with this job market. I have interviewed at numerous AM firms across the northeast, all to be met with the classic, “We thought you were an exceptional candidate, but we decided to hire for this position internally” or “We decided to hire someone with more experience.” Granted, I totally understand from a business perspective why they made the decision they made. However, with how many interviews and final rounds I have been on, the law of large numbers should’ve kicked in at this point. Simply put, I’m losing hope and what’s even worse is I know I’m not the only person in this boat. This isn’t a pity party, contrary to the content of this post, but I just need to air this out since it’s driving me up a wall. My network is tapped out, and I honestly have no clue what to do at this point. I would love to hear someone else’s story on their job search who’s in a similar position.
I’m in a similar boat, but over a decade of experience and no mba. Final rounded multiple times, only to be shopped when negotiating comp. It’s soft out there, despite what UE rate says.
At least you’re fresh out of school. Some folks have mortgages and families to support.
Similar boat. Did 7yrs in IB, was a top VP in RE coverage at a bulge. COVID year was horrendous so I left in '21. Went to a startup as head of finance. My company went under and I was laid off beg of this year along with most of the company. Now in this shit job mkt, I can't even get interviews much less an offer. Both In the startup / tech world and also when I'm looking at RE jobs. Being told I'm too experienced for junior-ish roles but don't have relevant experience for senior roles. I think this is unfortunately a really tough job mkt for most white collar professions. Don't know when it will recover. Considering going back to IB but even that is not going to be easy.
This comment section is going to be more depressive, bro. 😂
I’m 1 year out of MFin unemployed - very irrelevant experience prior to MFin - stuck in Canada surviving on one meal a day, that too on my fiancee’s part time salary.
Worse is I would have gotten a role in the US if I was Canadian, but needed H1B just to start.
Hey OP, similar situation.
Nearly landed a decent full-time gig in September but lost it. Didn't start getting interviews after my MBA until August or so (had only 1 interview from May to August).
As of now, I have no upcoming final round interviews / processes probably until New Years (but I'm in talks with 3 companies about potential Q1 hiring). As of now, I'm not willing to downgrade my expectations so I've turned down a few job opportunities that came through my network (might change if I'm still looking in Q2-Q3 '25).
I do think Q1 '25 (Jan - March) will be much better than the hiring market for Q4. At least for me, Q1 job postings this year were way better than every quarter that followed. And with interest rates cut, it is more likely this happens again.
A good chunk of people at my school are still looking but its definitely 10% of us. We all will land something eventually.
