Long-term networking?
Here is my situation: I am at a non-target and I want to get into IBD. I networked incredibly hard last fall and had a couple superdays but I didn’t get the internship offer. That being said, I got a back office internship offer at a BB and accepted an exploding offer upon completion.
I recently got the opportunity to attend a recruiting event that will have bankers and recruiters from multiple banks in attendance. I plan to go and network with IBD employees at the firm that I have accepted my offer at, but I would also like to talk with employees at other firms to stay on their radar for future opportunities (I dont want to renege on my current offer. I have done heavy networking at this firm and it would not end well). Do you have any suggestions on how to approach this (or is it a bad idea)? Should I ask recruiters about future lateral hiring? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
Be nice and network with everyone. Even people at your bank. Talk about your very positive internship experience, how you like your team a lot and have learned a lot (and for the same firm bankers) how supportive the firm has been (you're a non-target, they took a chance on you etc etc). Ask them about their path, about their work, you want to "learn" about what they do etc, what they like/don't like and know them as PEOPLE. If asked, you can admit that "of course you would be interested in banking." If you are in the same geography (ie. building as them) and are working full time, then chase them up for coffees/drinks etc, ie be LIKED to get an inside edge on lateral moves and hear about openings.
On the other bank people, pretty similar but can be tricky (can anyone here advise on the OP getting out of his contract if he gets an offer in banking? I don't have this experience and so can't advise, apologies). Don't mention that you have a job in place, but look to learn about the business, and treat all of them as people etc.
Good Luck
The longer you stay in your BO position, the tougher it'll be to switch to IBD (In my opinion). If I were you, I'd ask around and do some research on internal mobility at your firm. Usually, you are allowed to try and switch after 18 months from what I've heard.
