Looking for a job/internship

Hey everyone,

I am currently trying to break into investment banking, I come from a very non-target school. I am a triple major in finance, economics, and marketing. I have done internships at Genworth Financial as well as a boutique PWM firm.

So far I have sent out ~200 resumes or cold emails to various investment banks/PE/HF. Almost all of them are boutiques, I have talked to several people on the phone but everyone is not hiring right now (I know I missed the hiring season), I have gotten one interview and that is a phone interview that is scheduled for next Monday. I have also had several companies contact me about positions with financial planning offices, but I am really not interested in that (although I have taken several courses specifically for getting CFP).

My question to you is, should I go ahead and try to get anything in finance this summer and enroll in something like the investment banking institute to boost my resume, then try again for next year? Or is there some other way I should go about breaking into the industry this late in the season? Here is a link to my resume http://www.razume.com/documents/25008 if you see something that needs critiquing on there let me know, any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

GPA is important coming from a non-target.

You may want to elaborate on something other than only 3 acitivities, since you are cold-calling/e-mailing and half of your resume is Genworth which doesn't exactly scream high finance.

I don't know if tumbling should be spoken about.

Monkeyman2, thanks for the comment. My GPA is currently a 3.2 and that is likely not going to change by the end of this year. It was a 3.7, then I had to start working to pay for school on my own and I picked up triple major, kind of dropped the ball. Also, LOL about tumbling =P

Edit: Not sure what else I should elaborate on, only other work experience is as a job site manager for a construction company (how i paid for school) and a sales/marketing position for a business supply company. I have done coursework that is relevant to finance, but nothing that I would think is worthy of being put on my resume.

Hey we actually have a website where you use finance assessment games to prove your credentials to hiring hedge funds. We have clients who are looking for summer interns, so you should check out our website - ConnectCubed

Good luck otherwise!

You could talk more about what you have done with the club that you started - how many people you were in charge of, performance of your portfolio, even some ideas you had.

I think you need to be more aggressive and start making phone calls rather than just e-mails - There are hundreds of kids still looking for jobs and their resumes are likely going to stick out more than yours (I know people from semi-targets and large non-targets with 3.8+ still looking for jobs). The more aggressive you are the better. While its a time commitment, it usually is for everyone that comes from a non-target.

I have started calling companies as much as I can. The problem is I get off work around 4:30 every day and I call for about an hour, then people stop answering. I could put in there portfolio performance, it was only 5 members as it was not an official university sponsored club.

I am meeting with a really good friend of my cousin in NYC on April 6. He is a partner for pretty large PE firm, I have talked to him about possible internships with them but he said they are not doing any interns this year or last year. How do you think I could lever my connection with him into getting help breaking into the industry? He told my cousin a few weeks ago that he was thinking about starting a new firm with 60mil of personal investment, should I ask if I could join him with that? (Not sure if a start up would want someone with as little experience as I have)

Also has anyone done classes with Investment Banking Institute? I looked into it and they said they help get you a job after completion, I also found a few people that are now working at investment banks that went there for experience.

What year are you in school? There are a number of different strategies that you can pursue depending upon your year.
