Looking for a Mentor.

Hi there, happy Friday. I'm a 25 year old guy here and as per the title I'm looking for advice & mentor. I worked in the Media & Telecom group of a Japanese IB on the C&IB division on the origination side for roughly 2 years. Following a family emergency I had to take time off to take care of family and I figured it would be a great opportunity to recharge. I've on the hunt for a new role for quite some time now, and I am worried. Looking for some genuine advice to enter back into the work force and a potential mentor I could turn to for advice.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to help you re-enter the workforce and find a mentor:

1. Rebuilding Your Network

  • Reconnect with Former Colleagues: Reach out to your previous coworkers or managers from the Japanese IB. They can provide references, advice, or even leads on open roles.
  • Leverage LinkedIn: Update your profile to reflect your experience and career goals. Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your target industry, especially those in Media & Telecom or C&IB.
  • Tap into Alumni Networks: If you attended a university or business school, reach out to alumni in your field. Alumni are often more willing to help and mentor.

2. Finding a Mentor

  • Target Juniors and Seniors in the Industry: Based on WSO threads, juniors and seniors who recently went through the recruiting process are great resources. They can share insights on firms, hiring trends, and even recommend mentors.
  • Ask for Referrals: When networking, ask contacts if they know someone who could guide you. Frame it as, “I’m looking for someone who has experience in X and could provide advice on Y.”
  • Join Industry Groups: Participate in forums, investment clubs, or industry-specific events. These are excellent places to meet potential mentors.

3. Preparing for the Job Hunt

  • Refresh Your Skills: If you’ve been out of the workforce for a while, consider taking courses to sharpen your technical skills. Platforms like WSO offer financial modeling, Excel, and valuation bootcamps that can help you stand out.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice behavioral and technical questions to regain confidence. WSO offers mock interviews with professionals that simulate real scenarios.
  • Tailor Your Resume: Highlight your achievements in the Media & Telecom group and any transferable skills. Address the career gap by framing it as a time for personal growth and family responsibility.

4. Staying Motivated

  • Set Small Goals: Break your job search into manageable tasks, like sending five LinkedIn messages a day or applying to three roles per week.
  • Find Accountability Partners: Connect with peers who are also job hunting. They can provide support, share leads, and keep you motivated.

5. Potential Resources

  • WSO Forums: Engage in discussions on Wall Street Oasis to gain insights and advice from industry professionals.
  • WSO Mentorship Program: Explore the mentorship services offered by WSO, where you can connect with experienced professionals in your field.

Remember, persistence is key. The right mentor and opportunity will come with consistent effort. Good luck, and don’t hesitate to reach out for more advice!
