Looking to make transition from financial regulation to investment banking

I haven't seen much on various forums regarding this topic, but I just wanted to see if anyone had personal experience or advice relating to this. I work for a federal regulatory agency and currently working on an MBA (4.0 GPA) from a well-known SEC school, but not necessarily a "target school". I started in regulation as a bank examiner about four years ago. I initially loved it for the macro and micro-level economic, financial, and credit analysis opportunities it provided as well as the exposure to bank senior management and work/life balance. I have grown increasingly bored with being on the regulatory side of the table and through my on-the-job experience and MBA course work have become interested in m&a and leveraged finance, preferably in the financial institution space. I am in a risk management-focused position now, so I have experience with financial statement analysis, DCF modeling, various valuation methods, etc as well as exposure to some m&a activity and distressed credit investing. I've seen people on LinkedIn at BB and MM firms with regulatory experience, but they have typically been in compliance positions. Can anyone provide some insight into whether my experience can outweigh a "non-target" MBA and any additional tips on networking?

"finrgltr" I work for a federal regulatory agency and currently working on an MBA (4.0 GPA) from a well-known SEC school, but not necessarily a "target school".

SEC schools aren't even ranked top 20 MBA. Also, part-time MBAs aren't designed to pivot one's career in another direction.

You're going to have a tough time. Why would you do a part-time MBA that isn't even top 20? Was it just a local school that your firm said they would pay for?

Your best chance is probably to start out at a regional IB. I actually met someone that went to USC (Moore International MBA) and placed in a regional IB in Charlotte (Edgeview, but was acquired by Piper Jaffray) for a competitive salary. I think he was full time MBA though.
