Met MD at BB at cocktail got connection for potential interview

Hey Guys,

Ill start by introducing myself, so I'm a student with a 3.4 GPA from target school and no finance experience. I own a construction business while attending school that is located in my hometown 3 hours away that currently employs 24 employees, hence I need to stay in my hometown 90% of the time which means I cant go to class which explains my low gpa.

Anyways, I have not been getting much luck for interviews by applying online. So I decided to drive down to NYC and attend as many finance conferences in hopes of meeting a recruiter who could hook me up for an interview.

Last week I attended an event with a cocktail at the end. There was an MD from a BB that spoke and I instantly decided I wanted to work for him because well he was awesome. So I waited till the end of day and approached him. I walked up to him told him " I like your style" and that his panel discussion was the best. We started talking for a while and eventually and I joked around about girls and stuff to finally tell him that I wanted to work for him and asked him what I had to do work for him next summer. He told me to send me an email and he would hook me up with an interview. At that point I was so excited I had to excuse myself. Yeah so anyways, I sent him the email the next morning and didn't hear back form him unfortunately.

How long do you guys think I should wait till I call back? Sent email last Thursday and Its going to be a week tomorrow.

Best,

Fine to follow up after week - if he's working on something internally to get you in, he'll let you know. If not, well, there's no harm in trying.

Side question: if you spend 90% of your time in your hometown / on your own business, how do you expect to maintain a full time internship?

The same thought went through my mind. Something like this played out in my head.

Interviewer: Why isn't your GPA higher? takenotes08: I run a 24 person firm that consumes 90% of my time. Inteviewer: Good answer, BUT how will you be able to work here over the summer? Ding.

Robert Clayton Dean: What is happening? Brill: I blew up the building. Robert Clayton Dean: Why? Brill: Because you made a phone call.

I'm willing to sell my business/stop operating it if I can get an internship. I realized that running a construction business is completely brain dead and I need something more intellectually stimulating. I talked to him about this and he was fairly receptive.

Anyways, waiting one week is standard? I feel as do two weeks would be too long.

Yeah just send a note replying to your original - thank him, say you enjoyed your chat and wanted to follow up on the internship recruiting process. You're really excited to interview with his firm because of speaking with him, and you'd like to know what next steps look like. Modify the message as you see fit.

OK... why didn't he do it during the school year then?

Cant delegate that much work to someone.. the salary would essentially eat up the profits. Also, the person wouldn't have enough drive to run production and keep sales up if its not his business and his bottom line and you cant just randomly pick someone to sell equity to.
