Missed SA27 cycle..unsure of next steps.

Go to a non-target school, solid grades, solid EC/background, but unfortunately missed the window for SA27 IB recruiting. Had a few interviews but was unable to convert (also hard seeing those at your school post about offers) and unsure of what to do now in terms of junior summer. Will definitely network for FT-wise, but anyone who was/am in a similar boat have any advice of what to do?

Missing the SA27 cycle can feel like a setback, but there are still actionable steps you can take to position yourself for success. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Secure a Sophomore Summer Internship

  • Boutiques and Regional Firms: Start networking aggressively with regional or industry-specific boutiques. These firms often have less structured recruiting timelines and may still have openings for summer internships.
  • Non-IB Roles: Consider roles in corporate finance, private equity, asset management, or even startups. Any substantive finance-related experience will strengthen your resume and help you stand out for junior summer recruiting.

2. Ramp Up Networking for Junior SA

  • Start Now: Begin networking immediately for junior summer roles. Allocate time to connect with professionals at top firms while also maintaining relationships with boutique contacts.
  • Follow-Up: Periodically update your contacts with your progress, such as securing a sophomore internship or completing relevant coursework.
  • Leverage Networking Guides: Use structured networking strategies, like those outlined in WSO’s guides, to maximize your outreach efforts.

3. Polish Your Resume and Story

  • Highlight your solid grades, extracurriculars, and any relevant experience. If you secure a sophomore internship, make sure to include it on your resume as soon as possible.
  • Develop a compelling narrative about why you’re pursuing IB and how your experiences have prepared you for the role.

4. Prepare for Junior SA Recruiting

  • Behaviorals and Technicals: Use the time between now and the next recruiting cycle to master your technical and behavioral interview skills. WSO’s resources on investment banking prep can be invaluable here.
  • Early Applications: Be ready to apply as soon as applications open. Some firms, like PJT, explicitly ask for incoming roles on resumes, so having a sophomore internship lined up will be advantageous.

5. Full-Time Recruiting as a Backup

  • While your primary focus should be on securing a junior SA role, keep FT recruiting in mind as a contingency. Networking during your junior summer internship will be critical if you need to pivot to FT recruiting later.

6. Stay Resilient

  • It’s tough seeing peers post about offers, but remember that everyone’s path is different. Focus on what you can control—networking, skill-building, and securing relevant experience.

By taking these steps, you’ll not only strengthen your candidacy for junior SA recruiting but also set yourself up for potential FT opportunities if needed. Keep pushing forward—many have been in your shoes and successfully navigated their way into IB!

delay grad date by a semester and try another cycle of sa? try to understand what went wrong during the interview/application process and try to fix it next cycle. Also try to network more intensively if I were u, why don't you target people who are going to onboard this year and connect/build relationship with them now? In case you can get in touch with them again by the time you go into the process
