Moelis Lateral Analyst

Hello! Does anyone have any insight into the lateral analyst process? Heard that there is a first round with a VP and then a second round with an Associate. I assume the Associate interview will be even more technical than the VP? Historically they've done a "model" test as a 2nd round from what it seems so was interested if anyone has interviewed there recently.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the lateral analyst process at Moelis typically involves multiple rounds of interviews. Here's a breakdown:

  1. First Round: Often conducted with a VP, this round may include a mix of behavioral and technical questions. The focus is likely to be on your background, why you're interested in Moelis, and your fit for the role.

  2. Second Round: Historically, this has included a modeling test. Candidates are often required to build an LBO model from scratch under time constraints. This test may also include qualitative aspects, such as creating slides to highlight key investment considerations. The modeling test is a critical part of the process, so preparation is key.

  3. Associate Interview: If this is part of the process, it could be more technical than the VP interview. Associates may dive deeper into your technical skills, deal experience, and ability to handle complex financial scenarios.

For preparation, focus on mastering LBO modeling, understanding valuation methods (DCF, comps, etc.), and being ready to discuss your deal experience in detail. If you're looking for structured prep, WSO offers resources like the IB Interview Bootcamp and Private Equity Interview Bootcamp, which include detailed LBO tests and case studies.

Honestly the shittiest technical interview I’ve ever had. Bro was just spazzing numbers as I was typing, penalized me for the clarification he had to give cuz of his shitty narration, and then who tf singles out deferred revenue as a cash inflow? My brotha deferred revenue is cash you received that you haven’t earned revenue for so you subtract it. I don’t think the associate even knew what he was doing when he interviewed me.

Have u heard anything back about the Media position yet? Have they started interviewing for it?
