Most Mathematical Jobs at BBs?
I'm in a M.S. in computer science program at a target school and looking to do my thesis on a numerical analysis. I realize programming is required for a lot of roles, but what areas also involve a lot of math? I was told anything with the word "structured" in it is a good bet?
structured mathematician?
Is that an actual role?
I would say quant shops that focus on the derivatives space on the buy side (ie non fundamental) would be one place (analyst/associate/portfolio manager) - trading on a structured/exotics desk would be the other. From the limited amount I know though the most mathy/model heavy jobs tend to be risk (model creation/validation) jobs, not sure that's what you want though as you don't take your own bets in those roles.
Thanks for the tip. I hear you can learn more working in risk first, so that is definitely an option before trying to work in front office. What are "quant shops"? Something like securities division at an IB?
By Quant shops I mean buy side hedge funds/real money funds that run quantitative strategies or trade exotic derivatives: ie statistical arbitrage, volatility trading, knock-in/out options and various types of exotic swaps. Not BB/Sell Side though.
Do these roles require a PhD in Math or Physics? I had read somewhere that firms are only recruiting PhDs for these types of jobs. Is that still the case or could a masters get hired?
