Moving Bank in the US for Non-Citizens
Currently an analyst in London with a well-known MM shop. Through a relationship with an American MD on a current mandate, I've been offered a job on the Mothership (NYC/CH/LA). Due to firm structure, this would be a separate full-time contract that would require sponsorship, rather than an in-house secondment. They have said they are happy to move ahead.
Great opportunity but I'm apprehensive that I'll be locked in to this specific bank when I go across the pond without the flexibility (because they sponsor my visa) to change company down the road.
Can someone with knowledge in the area advise on the relative ease of transferring company, once in the US, on an arrangement like the one outlined above?
Cheers
Your in-house counsel will explain this to you. As we have no idea what visa or gc you are receiving and which conditions you are signing up for.
It is relevant to speak to your OWN attorney before deciding on complex employment decisions around:
- benefits ie ss, pension, life insurance, ..
- employment rights
- package
- FX risk
- time limits
- what if scenarios (ie visa regulations change, local/foreign employment regulations change, ..)

please make sure to speak to your own attorney before believing what the legal team at the company says. you probably won't have that much negotiation power anyway, but just make sure someone with global mobility experience in the legal field proofreads your agreements.
