My indirect boss just got fired

Started working with this guy 6 months ago and I used to find him much more resourceful than my direct boss. I think he also liked the work i did fkr him. As the title says he got fired and I heard about it from the head of the team who sent an email announcing my indirect boss' abrupt departure. I want to reach out to him on linkedin and just mention that I enjoyed working with him. If he goes to some decent place afterwards, which I think he might, I want him to keep me in mind. Is linkedin a good way of doing this? Is this advisable? For context he is much older than me (20 yrs plus) and has deep experience/ relationships in the industry
