NEED HELP ASAP THANK YOU NOTE
Hi,
I'm not one to care much about thank you notes or whatever but I had super day today in NYC and need some assistance. The problem is that I forgot what first guy that interviewed me looked like, and the interview was mostly technical so I didn't have any info on him like where he went to school and any previous roles. The issue is that he is a minority and I'm really worried I'm going to mix him up with someone else. I already sent emails to everyone else I interviewed with and was wondering if it is alright if I skip him?
Best,
Worried lol
Too bad, they're going to ding you for being a racist.
Yeah, skipping one person is better than guessing incorrectly. You won’t lose out on an offer from not sending a thank-you note to an email that you weren’t provided, but you might get dinged for coming across as generalizing races / ethnicities.
I have never not once in my 4 years of interview experience considered a thank you note in my hire / no hire decision. A thank you note has never been the deciding factor for an otherwise shaky candidate, so as long as you acted like a gave a fuck in the interview and didn’t come off as entitled your performance will speak for itself either way. I have gotten thank you notes from shitty candidates and never thought it improved their stock, either lol
What are your thoughts on a candidate sending update notes to every person they had a coffee chat with after they interviewed at a specific bank? (ie. messaging every person with the update re: just had my interview today). Is that too much?
I’m indifferent, I’ve had candidates keep me posted and sometimes I respond but don’t pay too much mind to it unless I already really liked them during the interview. I’ve never been annoyed by it because it’s not excessive to update someone you think you clicked with as you go through the process - you are building a “network” so it would make sense. Personally, I might only decide to update regularly the interviewers I thought I had the best personal relationship with rather than all of them, but if you want to do all of them that’s fine too.
Essentially the point still stands, these are just formalities once you’re in the process - they don’t diminish or improve your stock, it all comes down to that interview performance.
Thank you for your reply. Another thing I was wondering is if after catching up with someone again after an initial coffee chat (ie. this is your 2nd time speaking with them on the phone), you should send them another Thank You Email afterwards? Is that overkill? I tend to do it but worry it could be perceived as being too eager or chirpy idk
You're in luck, nobody listens to the DEI candidates anyway. They're just there for the quotas, don't send an email and forget about it.
