Networking approach to moving cities

Wondering if anybody has had to plan ahead to move cities and what the most successful networking approach would be?

I’m currently in New York and want to move to LA in ~1-2 years with my girlfriend. My current group doesn’t have an office out there, so that would involve some networking with other places. The Type A part of my brain wants to reach out now, but the other part of my brain thinks it’s probably too early to be very meaningful. Any advice from somebody who has gone through it?
