Networking Email Hooks and Tips

Hey y'all, I have been really frustrated with cold emailing recently and just wanted some input. I have probably sent out 300+ emails to bankers and have only gotten 10 to do a phone call with me. 3 of them were interns, which I personally think is an underrated way of networking because the other 7 I have gotten to speak with are BECAUSE I connected with interns.

Anyway, I am interviewing at a regional bank right now, and it is the only lead out of the 18 Capital Markets and Corporate banking internships I have applied to (ranging from BB's like Chase to lesser known MM's like Huntington). I also submitted a super solid HireVue for Chase, but the networking track has gone cold since speaking to the last CB analyst.

My email format is pretty standard, subject line: fraternity brother/eagle scout/some kind of connection looking to chat - and I usually send these around 8am local time for that banker during weekdays.

and then my email is pretty short and sweet like

"Hi *first name*,

Introduce myself and connection to the person and ask if they would be willing to hop on the phone for 15 mins at xyz time next wednesday/thursday.

Attached is my resume for context and potential conversation piece.

Thank you for reading, I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best,

my name

I understand I could definitely be doing something wrong here, but the other people I have spoken to have used basically the same format and seemingly get a much larger ratio of responses. My coffee chats go quite well, I just can't get to them consistently :/

Any feedback would be fantastic, especially if you're ripping on me, I want to grow haha. Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and hooks to improve your cold emailing strategy:

Email Structure and Content:

  1. Be Succinct and Sell Yourself:

    • Ensure your email is concise and highlights your unique value proposition. Avoid lengthy introductions and get straight to the point.
    • Example: "Hi First Name, I’m [Your Name], a finance student at [Your School] with a strong interest in [specific area of finance]. I came across your profile and was impressed by your work at company."
  2. Personalize Your Email:

    • Mention specific details about the person’s background or recent achievements to show genuine interest.
    • Example: "I saw your recent project on [specific project] and was really impressed by [specific detail]."
  3. Clear Call to Action:

    • Clearly state what you are asking for, such as a 15-minute phone call to discuss their experience.
    • Example: "Would you have 15 minutes next week to discuss your experience at company?"
  4. Attach Resume for Context:

    • Attach your resume but ensure it’s relevant to the conversation.
    • Example: "I’ve attached my resume for your reference."

Timing and Follow-Up:

  1. Optimal Sending Time:

    • Sending emails around 8 AM local time is good, but also consider sending them during mid-morning or early afternoon when people are more likely to check their emails.
  2. Follow-Up Strategy:

    • Don’t hesitate to send follow-up emails if you don’t hear back within a week. Limit follow-ups to three times.
    • Example: "Just following up on my previous email. I would still love to connect if you have some time."

Networking with Interns:

  1. Leverage Intern Connections:
    • Continue networking with interns as they can provide valuable introductions to more senior bankers.
    • Example: "I’ve found that connecting with interns has led to more opportunities to speak with senior bankers."

Additional Tips:

  1. Track Your Contacts:

    • Use an Excel sheet to keep track of who you’ve contacted, their responses, and follow-up dates.
    • Example: "Create an Excel sheet to track your contacts, target alumni, and use LinkedIn to find people."
  2. Ask for Advice or Feedback:

    • Instead of directly asking for a job, ask for advice or feedback, which can be more flattering and engaging.
    • Example: "I’m currently exploring opportunities in investment banking and would appreciate any advice or feedback you could offer."

By refining your email structure, personalizing your approach, and leveraging your intern connections, you can improve your response rate and build more meaningful connections. Good luck!

I think you should more open about time and date. Just say something like “my schedule is flexible, but would love to chat in the near future”. You are kinda taking a gamble that they are available on a specific day/week
