Networking in France - How does it work?

Thanks to WSO and other online resource I have learnt a lot about networking techniques and approaches. However, a lot of this is targeted at US/UK professional environment, thus a question arises:

How does networking (cold emailing, etc...) work in countries like France for example?

I'm having conflicting answers as some consider for example that cold emailing is effective while others stress that it's creepy, pushy, and that using Linkedin is better (or at least more polite-ish)

What do you guys think?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, networking in France, and more broadly in Continental Europe, has its nuances compared to the US/UK. Here are some key takeaways:

  1. Cold Emailing vs LinkedIn:

    • Cold emailing can be effective if done correctly. As highlighted in WSO threads, figuring out corporate email formats and reaching out with a concise, respectful message can yield results. However, in France, cultural norms lean towards a more formal and polite approach. Ensure your email is professional, personalized, and not overly direct.
    • LinkedIn is also a strong tool, but as noted in networking experiences shared on WSO, many professionals in Europe, including France, may not check their LinkedIn profiles frequently. This means follow-ups might be necessary.
  2. Cultural Sensitivity:

    • Networking in France often values a personal touch and relationship-building. Cold approaches might be seen as pushy if not handled delicately. A polite introduction, referencing mutual connections or shared interests, can make a significant difference.
    • Avoid being overly transactional. Instead, focus on seeking advice or insights, which is often seen as more respectful and engaging.
  3. Persistence Pays Off:

    • As shared in a WSO thread, even if initial responses are discouraging, persistence can lead to surprising outcomes. For example, one user mentioned a call with a department head that turned into a potential job opportunity despite initial challenges.
  4. In-Person Networking:

    • While cold emailing and LinkedIn are useful, in-person networking events or coffee meetings are highly valued in France. Building rapport face-to-face can often lead to stronger connections.
  5. Tailored Approach:

    • For younger professionals or peers, LinkedIn might be more appropriate. For senior professionals, email is often preferred, as suggested in WSO discussions.

Ultimately, networking in France requires a balance of professionalism, cultural awareness, and persistence. Tailor your approach to the individual and the context, and always prioritize building genuine relationships over immediate outcomes.
