Networking with other firms

I am currently interning with a firm in the financial district. I have gotten to know others in the firm, and I feel like I have built a pretty strong network for 10 weeks of being here. I want to expand into other institutions around here, but I haven’t ran into any leads, and it isn’t like my colleagues are setting up opportunities for me to meet with those outside of the firm. I want to get a better since of other corporate cultures and possibly create other options for coming back to work here as I am not from the area. I have gone to a couple of public networking events without much luck. Any ideas?
