No return offer - advice needed

Worked at a MM bank at NYC this summer as an IBD summer analyst. Had a great experience and also got to work on a live deal. However, got to know I am not getting a return offer recently and I don’t know what I should do at this point.

Looking to get advice from people on this forum on what my next steps should be. Thanks for any help in advance.

Not getting a return offer is not the end of the world. You still have a good experience on your res. However, what you have to do is simple: cast a wide net. Apply to everything and anything, grind networking, grind interview prep. FT IB spots are hard to land in this environment, so obviously while you should recruit at those, if I were you I would also apply to AM/IM/WM, consulting, S&T, sales, other finance roles, tech business roles, and anything else. Literally spam applications and networking. If you narrow yourself to top IB, you may end up with no job offers at all.

Apply, apply and apply (network first of course). The environment is certainly tough, but people will be leaving (bad bonus, exits) end of the month. Some banks will likely hire more in the fall due to headcount. I have been seeing a lot of first-year analyst roles at MM and boutiques. It shouldn't be too hard to land some interviews. I went through FT recruiting and was able to get 4 super days before I graduated.

In this environment, it could simply be a headcount issue. Regardless, that’s not relevant to OPs question - I’m sure he/she knows what they did wrong, if anything, and knows to change that in the future, but that doesn’t change the past. OP is asking how to get another job offer, not wallow in the past.

Why not always say that you got an offer but didn’t accept. Do they ever ask to see the written offer?

Something worth considering is trying to get a Middle Office Ops role to eventually move to FO. Not as difficult to score but if you choose the correct one it'll give you good visibility with FO. Once you build relationships with them you can leverage it to transition to FO yourself via internal mobility. It's a pretty long process (took me 2 years, I know people who took longer) but you'll have a job that pays in the interim, and it'll give you a good idea of what working at a bank is really like. I made the transition from S&T MO (due to tradeflow I was always in contact with sales and trading professionals) but I've heard others do it from risk management roles. Just some food for thought

I never did this myself, but have seen this done by many professionals at both my current and a previous firm. Many who worked in Risk Management at my current firm were able to transition to investing roles, while MO Investment Liaisons have moved into FO trading roles. It's very possible to do this, but those who worked in those MO jobs definitely did not love their time there (even if it significantly helped them get to their current roles).
