No return offer, what options outside of IB?

Go to an Ivy target, interned in at a BB, no return offer. Why? I think it’s a mix of headcount and also a lack of enthusiasm on my part. Realized IB wasn’t for me about half way through. Whatever, didn’t get the job done, not expecting any sympathy. Didn’t bomb the internship or anything and I think I left a good impression on a lot of people.

Just wondering, where do I go from here? Won’t look at that many FT IB roles because of a lack of interest but what else is worth looking at? I think in the long-term working on the buyside like a HF would be cool. Thinking about applying to ER and consulting roles to see what lands, anything else I should be looking at? Also not sure how to leverage the connections I made this summer + brand name of target.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some options and strategies for you:

Career Paths to Consider:

  1. Equity Research (ER):

    • ER can be a great stepping stone to the buyside, including hedge funds (HF). It offers a solid foundation in analyzing companies and industries, which is valuable for HF roles.
    • ER professionals often transition to roles in HF, long-only asset management (LO), corporate development, or investor relations.
  2. Consulting:

    • Consulting roles, especially at top firms, can provide a broad skill set and exposure to various industries. This experience can be leveraged for future transitions to strategy roles in big tech, well-funded startups, or even back to finance.
  3. Corporate Development/Strategy:

    • If you're interested in strategy roles in big tech or startups, corporate development can be a good fit. It involves working on mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, and other high-level business decisions.
  4. Asset Management (AM):

    • AM roles can also be a good fit if you have a passion for markets and trading. These roles involve managing investment portfolios and can lead to opportunities in HF or wealth management (WM).

Leveraging Connections and Brand Name:

  • Networking:

    • Continue to network with the connections you made during your internship. Reach out to them for informational interviews, advice, and potential job leads.
    • Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni from your Ivy target school who are in roles or industries you're interested in.
  • Brand Name:

    • Highlight the brand name of your target school and BB internship on your resume and in interviews. This can open doors and give you credibility in your job search.

Actionable Steps:

  1. Apply to ER and Consulting Roles:

    • Start applying to ER and consulting roles. Tailor your resume to highlight relevant skills and experiences from your internship.
  2. Network:

    • Reach out to your connections for advice and potential job leads. Attend industry events and join relevant professional organizations.
  3. Research and Prepare:

    • Read up on the industries and roles you're interested in. Prepare for interviews by practicing common questions and developing a strong narrative about your career goals and experiences.
  4. Consider Further Education:

    • If you're considering an MBA or other advanced degrees, research programs that align with your career goals. An MBA can provide additional opportunities and help you pivot to new roles.

By exploring these options and leveraging your connections and brand name, you can find a fulfilling career path outside of IB.
